Northern California, Oregon, Washington...Vancouver

We left San Francisco under sunny blue skies, and headed north towards Oregon, along the highway...

the larger highwaysoon gave way to just one lane that twisted through the mountains and giant Redwoods...

when we happened upon the Drive-thru tree...

just $5 and short drive later...

there it was...a sequoia large enough to drive a car through...

...as demonstrated by Nick. Clearly, time and money well spent.

Look at the size of these tree trunks...!

Giant Redwood Tree Trunk Kiss...

The road through northern California was dotted with roadside attractions and artsy tourist shops, especially those involving wood carving...

Everything was so lush and green, it was a really nice drive and we had fun stopping at various sites en route.

It was, however, the very end of November and the sun set early and it got dark very quickly...

so by the tim we crossed the state line and arrived at our destination in Cave Junction, Oregon, it was pitch black...

We spent the night at the Out N About Treesort (www.treehouses.com/treehouse/treesort/home.html)
My first pictures are only of the inside of the treehouse since it was so dark outside.
The Pleasantree is a treehouse with an interior loft and outdoor balcony, built around a living tree about 30ft off the ground, accessible by a series of rope bridges. This is the loft...

...and the stairs leading down from the loft, sink with running hot and cold water

just to the right of the ladder to the loft and the front door are the single bunkbeds

around the other side of the central tree was the toilet and shower...

...so it was a lot of fun and I'd love to go back in the summer when its not so freaking cold! We had a couple of space heaters but the treehouses themselves are not insulated or heated. This is the view in the morning from the window...

We got ready and went to the main lodge for breakfast before going zip-lining! So this was the first view in the daytime of our surroundings. Walking out the front door onto our balcony, we overlooked the main lodge. This is the Mastree room attached to the main lodge, with private treezebo-type treehouse with outdoor sitting area and loft...

From our balcony we had to walk the "Mountain View Treeway" to the first platform...excuse the shaky pictures!

...our treehouse, the Pleasantree as seen from first platform

view of Forestree Treehouse from same platform

...next walkway to platform with spiral staircase to get down!

the Cavaltree, just outside the main lodge

view of mountains from the front porch of the main lodge...

...and from back porch...

After breakfast with a few other guests in the large kitchen/dining area of the main lodge, we geared up, received some basic instruction and walked up to the first zip line...and then we were off...

Next zip line was a little higher and a little longer...but I was ready...!

Yeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa........

...........

the last one was a little higher and longer still...

After zip-lining, we went back to our treehouse to pack up our stuff and head out

Luckily there were ropes and pulleys to lower our luggage so we didn't have to schlep everything back accross all the rope bridges 30ft in the air

Spunky is a little afraid of heights so he didn't go ziplining or travel the Mountain View Treeway, but he was happy to grab a photo with one of the many carved wood creatures sitting in front of the main lodge

In daylight, it was much easier to find our way along the dirt road that leads to the Treesort...nice view, eh?

The single lane main road we were on was dotted with wood carving and treehouse shops and galleries. Some of the stuff was really neat. This was a multilevel treehouse with plenty of intricate carving...and no that's not a real kid climbing up the outside.

how cool is this bike made entirely out of carved wood?!?!?

the carved door to the gallery

They really like treehouses and burl in Oregon!

check out the double-decker doghouse...

Workshop and wood storage shed

At some point we crossed the state line into Washington State but I don't know when. I think this is Washington...

Last look out the window on the final hours of our roadtrip...with Carl (the bat, from Carlsbad Caverns) hanging from the rear view mirror. His wings are still closed as its daylight, he doesn't open them until after sunset when he feeds...and at the bottom of the picture, Spunky is hanging on to the GPS on the dashboard...

...at last we arrive at our destination...Vancouver, BC!!!
