Day 8: Utah & Trilobites

A beautiful day in the Utah desert…we left Salt Lake City in search for coffee (harder than you may think) and drove south down the highway in near 100F heat - again.

After arriving at the booming metropolis of Delta, Utah we veered off onto some smaller highways and then dirt roads into the middle of NOWHERE!

We kept following our directions and the occasional sign...

which gave us hope that we were in the middle of nowhere but at least we were traveling in the right direction...and finally we arrived.

What we arrived at was basically a big open quarry with a bulldozer perched on top of a huge mound of rocks. We picked up our buckets and hammers, and climbed down into the pit...and started cracking rocks. And yes we found trilobites, lots of them! Wohooo!!!

First trilobite of the day!

After almost 2 hours of digging (it was HOT!) we felt a couple drops of rain and in the distance we could see dark clouds and hear the rumbling of thunder. At that point we decided we had had enough, and we had already found a ton of trilobites, so it was time to head out. And we wanted to try to beat the storm if possible. We took a last look for trilobites on our way out, then

About to drive through a sandstorm...

View out the side window, through a few drops of rain, of the storm in the distance.
