Albuquerque, NM is the Crossroads of the Old Southwest...
Native Americans had long settled the rich, middle Rio Grande River before the arrival of the Spanish. With Coronado's arrival in 1540, the valley began a slow transition to Spanish settlers. Albuquerque has a complex and fascinating history as a cross roads for ranchers, the Camino Real, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and of course, Route 66.
West out of Albuquerque, back on old Rte. 66
Along the way, as we were actually driving through the Acoma Indian Reservation, we stopped at a local vendor to get some traditional Frybread
Spunky loved the Frybread
So did Nick, he said he wanted to try Frybread if we ever got the chance...
On the road again...
Remnants of life along Rte 66...
Please look out for the cows...there are cows everywhere...in just about every state actually
More trains than cars on our road
This is what we're looking at as we're driving...
Just outside Thoreau (btwn Grants and Gallup) we crossed the Continental Divide, where rainfall divides!
view of Continental Divide in New Mexico...it doesn't look the same everywhere. (The Continental Divide doesn't travel an exact line, in North America it basically follows the Rocky Mountains through Canada, the US and the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico)
Where Utah, Colorado, Arizona & New Mexico meet
Standing in all 4 states at once...Nick's back foot is in Utah, his front foot in Arizona, Sari's back foot in Colorado and front foot in New Mexico
Even Spunky was in all 4 states at once!
We left Teec Nos Pos, New Mexico and drove north into Colorado...
View out front windshield as we drive toward Cortez, Colorado
Check it out...look who finally figured out how to stitch pictures together to make a panorama! It was just in time too, because we are going through some fantastic country. I'm going to continue to work on the blog and let Nick work on the panorama, and I'll post them to the blog later.
