Oklahoma-Texas

We started out on the road Wednesday morning, driving west on I-40 through the Oklahoma countryside, towards our next stop in Amarillo, Texas.

We weren't driving for more than 5 minutes when we ended up pulling over to help Yvon and Collette, whose RV had blown a tire. They just needed to use a telephone to call their auto club. They were a very nice couple from Quebec and were driving to Arizona for the winter.

West of Oklahoma City we started looking for the old Route 66, which still weaves through some little towns indicated by historical markers...

but for the most part its non-existant, or its used as a service road that runs parallel to I-40...or else it has been replaced by I-40 altogether. Not so exciting, but it did end up taking us through a few small towns and backroads,

We passed lots of farms with cows and wind farms with giant wind turbines...

and oil wells, and old fashioned windmills

Spunky had fun at the Rte. 66 Museum in Clinton, OK...

Many old buildings and ghost towns off old Rte. 66...

Our Rte. 66 map/guide book mentioned Jiggs BBQ, and we happened to pass it so we gave it a try.

Spunky enjoyed his BBQ sandwhich!

and since we drove through Elk City, OK, we stopped at Country Dove to try some chocolate mouse pie the guide book also mentioned...good pie...

Still looking for bits and pieces of old Rte. 66, we passed by the still preserved 1936 Tower building gas station and coffee shop.

Texas has lots of stuff out in the middle of Nowhere...maybe because its so damn big and they have land to spare, I dunno...but here is the first of several "big things in the middle of nowhere":

Giant Cross
The 2nd Largest Cross in the Western Hemisphere

To put it into perspective, there is a person standing at the bottom of the cross...

What are you having for dinner Spunky? What's that? Rattlesnake? You're not really going to eat that are you...?

Oh yes he did!
